R404a Retrofit to Low GWP Refrigerant

Arcus - Sainsbury's Petrol Filling Station - Bury St Edmunds

With the ban on servicing of equipment using virgin R404a coming into effect on 1st Jan 2020, Newman Refrigeration were contracted to design, supply and install a new plant, to run this store's existing refrigerated display cases with a new low GWP refrigerant not affected by the ban for the upcoming 2020 F-Gas regulations.

Newman Refrigeration and Arcus Solutions – Your Leading and Approved Refrigeration Contractor

Newman Refrigeration Ltd is proud to be an approved refrigeration contractor for Arcus Solutions who provide all the hard and soft facilities services for Sainsbury's supermarkets nationwide. We provide reactive refrigeration service and support in the East Anglia region and complete projects and planned remedial works on blast freezers, walk-in fridges, coldroom systems and more for Sainsbury's sites.

With the ban on use of R404a fast approaching and this system reaching the end of its life expectancy, we were asked to survey, design and supply a retrofit solution to use a new low GWP refrigerant at this store.

What We We’re Able to Do for Sainsbury's Petrol Filling Station

At Newman Refrigeration Ltd, we were able to design and install a bespoke build condensing unit to match the cooling demand of the existing display cases but designed for use with the new low GWP refrigerant R449a. Whilst R449a condenses at a higher temperature than R404a a larger air-cooled condenser was required and we opted to use EC condenser fans with 0-10v control to provide steady discharge pressure set as low as possible for efficiency.

The expansion valves in the display chillers were swapped for a R449a equivalent and our installation team completed the project during a 1-day shift to minimise disruption to the stores trading hours. If your commercial refrigeration equipment is using R404a or you are unfamiliar with the new 2020 F-Gas regulations, please contact us today. Our refrigeration consultants would be happy to go over your systems and provide an effective solution.
